There are many scenarios where a cheap disposable seal is the perfect fit for a machine in your factory. However, a very expensive piece of equipment will need some extra attention as to what kind of polymers and designs go into those seals. PTFE, FKM\/Viton, and reinforced elastomers far outperform generic rubber seals, and can be modified for extreme conditions like drastic temperatures, high pressures, and corrosive fluids.<\/p>\n\n<p>There are more interesting options that require less maintenance, like back up rings and anti-extrusion designs in seals. A back up ring will be seated in the machine alongside the main seal and take some of the stress from the pressure, temperature, or corrosion. This will extend the main seals\u2019 lifespan, and the backup ring is often cheaper and made of less material.<\/p>\n\n<p>Lastly, matching the type of seal to specific designs of machines can also help improve your odds when dealing with seal failures. You\u2019ll have to speak to a seal manufacturer for the exact specifications, but you might consider an O-Ring versus a U-Cup or a Piston seal in place of an existing seal.
